I hope you won't say good-bye to the Psalms and that you will go back to them again and again for encouragement, comfort, and worship and praise to God.
Now we come to Proverbs which were written primarily by David's son, Solomon, king of Israel, v. 1. This is wisdom literature with wise sayings for practical daily living. We will see warnings and wise counsel to live a godly life.
Purpose of the Proverbs, v. 1-6
- to teach people wisdom and discipline
- to teach people how to live disciplined and successful lives.
- to help them do what is right, just, and fair.
- to give insight and discernment
- to give guidance
"The fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."
- Young people should listen and respect their parents' instruction and correction. v. 8-9 God gave children parents for a reason!
- Avoid people who try to lead you into trouble. v. 10-19 Their ways may sound exciting, but the end is bitter.
In Proverbs "Wisdom" is personified as a lovely woman, and "Folly" is personified as an evil woman.
In these verses "Wisdom" warns of the troubles that await those who ignore her. "But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm." v. 33
