Psalm 106

Psalm 106 focuses on God's forgiveness, but in so doing it also points out man's sinfulness. The psalm begins with praise and thanks to the Lord for His goodness and His enduring love. v. 2 mentions the glorious miracles of the Lord. Who can ever praise Him enough?

v. 6 begins the psalmist's confession of his own sin as he remembers Israel's sins as well. He makes no excuses. "We have sinned. We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly!" He remembers all the times that God worked miracles in Israel's behalf and then they promptly forgot Him and rebelled against Him. Over and over they failed; then God had to judge them, and then they repented. God forgave them every time, and the cycle started over. All this should be a warning to us because we have the same weaknesses they did. We cry out to God when we're in trouble or in great need, and then we tend to forget Him when things are going well.

All this is a picture of God's great love for His people, Israel. And His love extends to us as well. We deserve only judgment as they did. We can be thankful that God's wonderful love and great mercy are not dependent on our faithfulness. We'd be sunk! He sent His son to die for our sins when we were not even born. Then He sought us and found us when we were not seeking Him.

"Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, 'Amen!' Praise the Lord!" v. 48
