This is Paul's second personal letter to Timothy. It is actually the last word we have from Paul as he was again imprisoned, facing almost certain death. He was, in fact, eventually executed. It is, as we will see, a godly man's last word to his beloved son in the faith.
Paul begins the letter by identifying himself which was the custom of the day. He says he has been sent out to tell others about "the life he has promised through faith in Christ Jesus." I think we can take this two ways. God promises us personal peace in this life and then eternal life when we put our faith in Christ Jesus. v. 1
Paul is writing to Timothy "my dear son." Though Timothy is not his biological son, Paul loves him just that much! He asks that God would give him
- grace--God's favor that he doesn't deserve
- mercy--the fact that God won't give him what he DOES deserve
- peace--peace with God for his salvation and the peace of God for this life v. 2
Psalm 115
To God alone goes all the glory for His unfailing love and faithfulness! Just think about unfailing love and faithfulness for a while and realize that God is the only one who can truly offer these.
What else does this psalm tell us about God?
- Our God is in the heavens.v. 3
- He does as He wishes! And we know that since He is perfect, whatever He pleases is right. v. 3
- He is alive. Unlike the idols which are shaped by human hands and which have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see and ears but cannot hear, noses but cannot smell, hands but cannot feel, and feet but cannot walk, and throats but cannot make a sound! vv 4-8
- He is our helper and our shield. v. 9-11
- He remembers us and will bless us if we fear Him. v. 12-13
- He made heaven and earth. v. 15
