"Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love."
Everyone in the world is in favor of "love." And so, what is love? v. 8 tells us that "God is love." Let's just think about that for a minute. I'm afraid in many cases people have acted as though "Love is god"--a feeling to be sought after and perhaps worshiped.
But God Himself IS love. Apparently love somehow reflects the characteristics of God. He is good, giving, unselfish, holy, merciful, gracious, and just. In fact, He is perfect! Of course, our love cannot reach this high standard, but because we know God, our love can become closer and closer to His high example. And the better we know Him, the more godly our love becomes. Love can only be true love if it comes from God. When we love in a godly way, it shows that we are God's children.
