These verses record Jesus' arrest. You will notice that Jesus did not resist; rather, He submitted to the Father's plan. While God planned that Jesus would die paying the penalty for the sins of the world, these men still freely chose to betray and arrest Him. This is one thing about God that we cannot fully understand. He is sovereign over the affairs in this world, but at the same time, man has a free will.
The passage ends with these words: "At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled." They had good intentions, but the scene was violent and scary. In this particular moment, they did not trust God. They had traveled with Jesus and had seen His miracles in person. Yet they were vulnerable. Are we any less vulnerable? I'm afraid not. We must daily trust God, talk to Him, and listen to Him through His Word.
Psalm 135
This is a beautiful psalm of praise. At least 7 times the word "praise" is included in this psalm. And so I think it's safe to say that we should be praising the Lord! See vv. 1-3 and 19-21
Reasons to praise the Lord:
- He is good. v. 3
- He is greater that any other god. v. 5
- He is sovereign. v. 6 "The LORD does whatever pleases him throughout all heaven and earth, and on the seas and in their depths."
- He is Lord over the weather. v. 7 When you think about it, the weather is one thing that is totally out of man's control. We can "fix" a lot a things today, but we can't stop earthquakes, or hurricanes, or volcanoes, or even the rain. Only God can control the weather.
- He was in control of all history. vv. 8-12
- His name endures forever. v. 13 This means that He Himself lives forever.
- Unlike the idols which are shaped by human hands, God can speak; He can hear; and He can smell. vv. 15-18 We serve a living God!
