Think about how many times we long for joy--not temporary pleasure or happiness, but deep down joy and contentment.
Well, we are promised joy in this psalm. "Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty!"
These verses mention three aspects of God's forgiveness:
- He forgives our disobedience.
- He puts our sin out of His sight.
- He clears us of guilt.
After refusing to confess his sins, David finally confessed all his sins to God and stopped trying to hide his guilt. True confession means
- Agreeing with God that our words or actions or attitudes are indeed sin
- Fully intending not to repeat the sin
David goes on to encourage us to trust the Lord. "For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory. The Lord says, 'I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you."
He warns us not to be stubborn like a horse or mule!
"Many sorrows come to the wicked, but unfailing love surrounds those who trust the Lord. So rejoice in the Lord and be glad, all you who obey him! Shout for joy, all you whose hearts are pure!"
