2 Corinthians 10
Apparently some in Corinth were still opposing Paul and even slandering him saying he was bold in his letters but that he had no authority. In response, Paul assured them that he didn't have to fight battles the way most people do. "We use God's mighty weapons...to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments." What are God's mighty weapons? God's Word, prayer, faith, the work of the Holy Spirit... We have these weapons available to us today. These weapons still destroy the proud obstacles that keep people from knowing God. I think we often under-estimate the power of these weapons, but God wants us to use them just as Paul did.
In response to his critics, Paul compared himself only to God's standards. "As the Scriptures say, 'If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.' When people commend themselves, it doesn't count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them." vv. 17-18
Psalm 47
God is worthy of praise that is beyond our words. However, the psalmists did the best they could to describe Him. This psalms calls Him "the Lord Most High" and "the great King of all the earth" and "awesome." They worshiped Him by clapping their hands, shouting to God with joyful praise, and singing praises. The words, "sing praises" are used 4 times in v. 6 alone. So I guess we're supposed to sing praises!
The praise we find in these psalms are words we can use when we pray, when we worship, as well as when we talk to others about God. His indescribable attributes should not keep us from praising Him liberally.
