Today we begin studying the letter that Paul, while in prison in Rome, wrote to the Church in Ephesus. Paul had a long and warm relationship with the people of this church, and this letter is written to encourage them. It's rather ironic that the prisoner wrote a letter of encouragement!
Paul greets them by calling them "God's holy people in Ephesus, who are faithful followers of Christ Jesus." What a great testimony! And he adds this blessing "May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace." vv. 1-2
Beginning in v. 3 Paul praises God for all the spiritual blessings we enjoy because we are united with Christ. I use the word "we" because what was true for the Ephesians is also true of us. Even before He created the world, God planned for us to be His child because of what Jesus would one day do on our behalf. God Himself has shown us "glorious grace" because we belong to His dear Son. "He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins." v. 7 Not only that, but has showered His kindness on us, and given us wisdom and understanding.
Psalm 65
This is a hymn of praise! David rejoices and praises God because
- He forgives our sins! v. 3
- He answers our prayers. vv. 2, 5
- He is a God of infinite power, vv. 5-8
- He cares for all the earth. vv. 9-12
- He knows our needs.
- He is generous.
- He provides bountifully.
- He gives us more than we deserve.
- He deserves our praise. Even nature responds to His goodness. "They all shout and sing for joy!"
