Philippians 2:19-30; Psalm 85

Philippians 2:19-30
Paul and Timothy's relationship was as close as a father and son. In fact, in the New Testament days, sons were often apprenticed to their own fathers to learn the family business. In much the same way, Paul was a mentor to Timothy, leading him, teaching him, and eventually turning over leadership to him. vv. 19-24

Beginning in v. 25, Paul tells them that he is sending Epaphroditus back to them. Epaphroditus had been sent from the Philippian church to carry a gift of money to Paul. While he was there he became ill and nearly died, but God had mercy on him and he recovered. Paul praises Epaphroditus and encourages the Philippians to welcome him home with the love, joy, and honor that he deserved. vv. 25-20

Psalm 85

Warren Wiersbe gives this outline for Psalm 85: Restoration, Revival, Responsibility

I. Restoration.  The psalmist (descendant of Korah) is praising the Lord for restoring their fellowship with God. vv. 1-3

II. Revival. What does the word "revive" mean? Think of a person who is very tired or even discouraged. He hardly has energy to do anything. After a good meal and a night's sleep, we might say he is revived. And so the psalmist is asking God to refresh and energize His people. vv. 4-7

III. Responsibility. God has saved us by His generous grace. He is willing to restore us when we've failed Him as well as revive us when we are exhausted and discouraged. Then He calls us to

• listen to His Word v. 8
• avoid going back to our foolish ways. v. 8
• fear Him v. 9

Then the psalmist tells us what God will do for us if we fear Him.

• Our land will be filled with His glory. v. 9
• We will experience love, truth, righteousness and peace. v. 10-11
• The Lord will pour down His blessings. v. 12
• Our land will yield a bountiful harvest. v. 12

The more we honor God, we see that He takes care of everything else!
