2 John; Psalm 23:4-6
This is another of John's letters. v. 1 tells us that he is writing to the "chosen lady and to her children." Some translations call her "the elect lady." Bible scholars differ as to who she is. Wiersbe in "With the Word Bible Commentary" says that she is "an anonymous Christian woman whose home was open for God people to meet for fellowship and worship." Ryrie in his study Bible says that "some believe that the "elect lady" is a figurative way of designating a particular church." The Life Application Study Bible takes the position that it is a local church. Anyway, we know that it contains truths that apply to us today.
This is a short book--only 13 verses. I'm going to give you an assignment to read through the book and see if you can discover what you think were the main points that John wanted to get across.
Psalm 23:4-6
"Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever."
Jesus will be close to us in the most difficult circumstances. He will protect and comfort us. We need to let Him do it. Sometimes I'm afraid for some reason we don't accept Jesus' love and comfort. We can do this by staying in the Word, praying, and worshiping privately and with God's people.
He will bless us to overflowing! In Bible times it was customary to bless and honor people with feasts and by anointing them with oil. This was for the fragrance and for protection from illness.
God's goodness and unfailing love will never leave us, and we will live with Him for all eternity!
