Here we find another short letter, 25 verses, which can easily be read in one sitting. And that's your assignment. Read the book of Jude looking for key words and themes. What stands out to you on this first reading?
Jude identifies himself in v. 1 as the brother of James. Both of them were sons of Mary and Joseph, making them Jesus' half brothers. Neither James nor Jude were believers until after Jesus' resurrection, and then they became strong leaders in the early church. Any ideas as to why Jude did not identify himself as Jesus' half brother?
Psalm 29
This is a beautiful psalm of praise. Praise should be a regular part of our Christian lives, privately and publicly. This psalm reminds us of God's great glory and power.
- We should praise God at all times. David even calls on the angels of heaven to honor the Lord for his glory and strength. vv. 1-2
- We praise God because of His power. Nature shows us God's great and mighty and fearful strength. vv. 3-9 The forces of nature are all around us every day, in the calm as well as in the storm, reminding us of God the Creator.
- We praise God because He is in control. v. 10 "The Lord rules over the floodwaters. The Lord reigns as king forever." Never forget this even when it seems that the forces of evil are in control. They are not!
- We praise God because he blesses us with strength and peace. v. 11 "The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace." We don't have to be weak, troubled, or anxious. We must trust God to keep this offer of strength and peace.
