"Then the man--Adam--named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all who live. And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife." vv. 20-21 Adam and Eve deserved to die, indeed they were condemned to death because of their sin. In v. 21 we see that animals were sacrificed in their place; they were a substitute for them. I think it's important to remember that the Garden of Eden was a place of peace before sin entered. Adam, Eve, and the animals were vegetarians. The animals were not killed for food for Adam and Eve or for other animals. See Genesis 1:29-30. And so this violent and bloody sacrifice would have been a shocking and sorrowful thing. This foreshadows that one day Jesus would come, and He would shed His blood and be the substitute for our sins!
When God said, "...the human beings have become like us, (note the plural pronoun indicating the Trinity) knowing both good and evil." Knowing good and evil was the ONLY way in which they were like God. We earlier in Genesis 3 that they were cursed because of their sin, and they would eventually die.
John MacArthur says in his study Bible that God's driving Adam and Eve from the Garden was actually an act of mercy since had they lived forever, it would have been in a pitiful, cursed condition. "Taken in the broader context of Scripture, driving the man and his wife out of the garden was an act of merciful grace to prevent them from being sustained forever by the tree of life." (MacArthur Study Bible, p. 29)
God placed the mighty Cherubim and the flaming sword to guard the entrance to the Garden.
