Genesis 17:15-27
We continue the same day in which God confirmed His covenant with Abraham and set the sign of circumcision. God confirmed that not only would Abraham be the father of many generations, but Sarai, now called Sarah, would be the mother! Upon hearing this incredible news, Abraham laughed! Don't forget that he was 99 years old and Sarah was 90! "Then God said: 'No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and his descendants after him." v. 19 Ishmael would also be the father of a great nation, but God's covenant would be with Isaac. In vv 23-27, we see that Abraham was obedient to the terms of the covenant, and he and all the males of his household were circumcised that day.
Psalm 17
Vv 1-5 might remind us of a courtroom! "Hear a just cause, O LORD..." I guess we all have a sense of fairness, and we're troubled when life seems unfair. David apparently felt the same way. We know that God is a perfect and righteous judge, and He will see that justice is eventually satisfied. We leave that in God's hands, but we should pray along with David, "Uphold my steps in Your paths, That my footsteps may not slip." Sometimes we're so concerned about other people's sins, that we minimize our own!
In vv 6-9 David asks God for comfort and protection. These are beautiful words that need no comment from me!
"I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God;
Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech.
Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand,
O You who save those who trust in You
From those who rise up against them.
Keep me as the apple of Your eye;
Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,
From the wicked who oppress me,
From my deadly enemies who surround me."
