This letter apparently came near the end of Peter's life (v. 14), and he is taking this opportunity to review the important basics he has taught these believers. In vv. 16-18 he recalls the transfiguration which he witnessed with his own eyes, and which is recorded in Matt. 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; and Luke 9:28-36. He had seen the splendor and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, and he had heard the voice of the Father saying, "This is my dearly loved son, who brings me great joy." Two Old Testament prophets, Moses and Elijah, also appeared at the transfiguration. Peter affirms in this passage that the Old Testament prophets wrote God's message. "Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet's own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God." vv. 20-21

No matter what attacks may come upon it, we must remember that the Bible is God's very words given to us through people. We have the scripture to light our way until Christ, the Morning Star, appears in His full glory. We must never neglect it or minimize its importance!
