Peter ended chapter one by assuring us that God's Word is true and powerful and completely trustworthy. Now he warns strongly about false teachers. They are nothing new--the Old Testament reported false prophets in Israel--and we are to watch out for them and their destructive heresies. They twist Christ's teachings and lead people away from the truth. In addition, their lives do not show forth a testimony that honors the Lord. "Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality." v. 2 Not only that, they lie so as to get their hands on people's money. But God has already condemned them, and He has a long history of judgment on evil.
- Angels who sinned were thrown into hell.
- God did not spare the unbelieving world in Noah's day.
- He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.
v. 10 is interesting. We know that God hates all sin, but v. 10 tells us "He is especially hard on those who follow their own twisted sexual desire, and who despise authority." This is a pretty stern warning to the society we live in today.
Psalm 9:11-20
We are to sing praises to the Lord telling the world about his unforgettable deeds. He avenges murder and cares for the helpless and suffering. Just as we saw in 2 Peter, we see here that God will judge the wicked. "The Lord is known for his justice. The wicked are trapped by their own deeds." v. 16
God will even judge wicked nations, but He will remember the poor and needy. We should pray for our own nation that we will trust God and live according to His Word.
