1 Peter 5:1-7
This chapter begins with a word to church leaders. However, none of us should ignore this advice because, after all, we are all leaders in some way, and we should strive to live up to highest standards so that our example will be an encouragement to others. We are to gently care for anyone the Lord has placed in our care--physically and/or spiritually. We should willingly serve others and in so doing we are serving the Lord. vv. 1-4
In the same way, we are to willingly accept the authority of others. This does not really come naturally! Often we want to be in charge and have our own way. God will lift up the humble, but the proud will be put to shame. vv. 5-6
These instructions may seem hard, but v. 7 encourages us to trust God completely. "Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you." The King James Version says, "Casting all your cares upon him; for he careth for you." I like the image of throwing all your troubles on the Lord because He surely handles them better than we do. Think of throwing all your garbage into the land fill. No way would you want to jump in there and get it back. So it should be when we cast all our cares on the Lord. We should try to forget about them and trust Him to take care of them.
Psalm 7
David prays to God to save him from those who wished to destroy him. While doing this, he was also willing for God to examine him to see if he was harboring sin. vv. 3-5. He warns that God will judge the wicked who refuse to repent. vv. 12-16 Then like so many psalms, this one ends with thanksgiving and praise. "I will thank the Lord because he is just. I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. v. 17
Verse to meditate on today: "Casting all your cares upon him; for he careth for you." 1 Peter 5:7
