On this Good Friday, 2 Corinthians 5:21 came to my mind. "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." This is the Gospel in a nutshell. Jesus had no sin; He was and is totally righteous. We are completely sinful with no goodness whatsoever in us. At our conversion, we make an exchange--He takes our sin, and we take His righteousness. On the cross, Christ took the punishment and separation from God that we deserve; He paid our debt; He died in our place. By placing our trust in Him, we receive His righteousness and are reconciled to God. Is it a fair trade? Certainly not! In fact, Jesus did it all, and we did nothing! But we have a great, merciful, gracious God whose devised this plan for our salvation. Today we remember Jesus' great sacrifice of offering Himself as payment for our sin.
Isaiah 53:5-7
Centuries before Christ was born, Old Testament prophets foretold His coming, His life, and His death. The passage below comes from the Prophet Isaiah.
"But he was pierced for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all."
