Rev. 5:1-5
This chapter begins with a focus on a scroll in God's right hand. It has writing on both sides and is sealed with seven seals. John weeps because no one heaven or earth could open the scroll. Only Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals. The idea of a rolled up, sealed scroll was like a Roman will. Only the rightful heir could open the will. Of course, the seven seals again tell us of its perfection. The writing on both sides says that it is complete and final--nothing could be added or changed. Jesus is the promised Messiah; He came from the tribe of Judah, and He is the perfect King in the line of David. He is the rightful heir of all that the Father promised. He gave Himself as the perfect sacrifice on the cross; He is our Redeemer who has bought us back from the bondage of sin and is worthy to give us our inheritance of salvation!
Psalm 37:9-15
Look at the contrast between the wicked and the righteous. Remember that we were all wicked before we met the Lord, and we are righteous only because Jesus' blood has paid for our sin.
Evil men will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land and enjoy great peace. vv. 9-11 It's interesting that this idea of an inheritance came up today in the Psalms in light of the passage we saw in Revelation! The wicked rage against the Lord and His people, but they are no match for Him. v. 13 tells us that He laughs at them because their day is coming. It's almost like an ant shaking his fist at a giant! He may feel strong and fierce, but he can be obliterated with one step!
