We are known by our actions and by our words. But we cannot start with the outward actions and words. These come from within us--whether good or bad. If we have the Holy Spirit working in us, we will produce good "fruit," and good words. We cannot really consistently do what is good and speak good and kind words if we are evil on the inside. "Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks." v. 34
Let's be careful about thoughtless, careless words. Jesus warns that "men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken." v. 36 Looking at the context, I believe this is because those careless words reveal what is really inside the person. But at the same time, it's wise for us to choose our words with caution. Most of us do far too much talking and far too little listening! And the more we talk and chatter, the more likely we are to say things (such as gossip or criticism) that don't please the Lord.
Psalm 104
This psalm is a hymn of praise to God as the creator and sustainer.
- He created and sustains the heavens. vv. 2-4 This is beautiful poetry..."He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind, He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. vv. 3-4
- He created and sustains the earth. Even remembering the Great Flood of Genesis, we know that God was in control. At His rebuke "the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight;..." v. 7
For our meditation: "Praise the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty." v. 1
