Matthew 25:1-13; Psalm 126

Matthew 25:1-13
This section is continuing the teaching that Jesus Christ will return. What does this have to do with us today? Just like the 10 bridesmaids, we are to watch (stay alert) and be ready! "So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return." v. 13

There are several possible symbols in this passage though we must not lose sight of the major point which is to be ready at all times for Christ's return. The wedding metaphor reminds us that the Church is called the Bride of Christ, and we are to anticipate His return. The oil is often a symbol of the Holy Spirit, and it could also be a symbol of the Word of God which we are to hold forth as a light for the whole world to see.

Psalm 126
When something wonderful happens to us, it can seem like a dream! We must remember, just as Israel did, to give God the glory. Then we can rejoice with honesty, and others will see what great things God has done for us! vv. 1-3

Our deliverance from trouble or other great happenings in our lives are only the beginning. God wants us to use our blessings to bless others as well. "Restore our fortunes, Lord, as streams renew the desert." v. 4 The world around us is like a thirsty desert which desperately needs the living water of salvation.

Then, in addition, God wants us to get busy in the "fields," which represent the world around us. God may use us to prepare the "ground" of others' hearts, or He may want us to plant the "seed" of the Word of God, or He may allow us to reap the "harvest." vv.. 5-6

And so as long as we live on this earth, our job is never done!
