Genesis 21:22-32
Water was a precious commodity in the region where Abraham was living. Remember that he is not dwelling in his own homeland, but he is an alien in a foreign country. In these verses he makes an agreement with King Abimelech for a peaceful sharing of the water. They mark the place where they made their agreement with a tamarisk tree and called the place Beersheba. More importantly, this place also became one of Abraham's worship sites, where he "called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God." This name emphasizes that God is indeed everlasting as is the covenant He made with Abraham and the promises He has made to us.
Psalm 24
v. 1 reminds us that God owns everything, including us!
"The earth is the LORD'S, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell therein,"
Of course, we must not worship the earth or anything in it, I think it's biblical that we respect it and take care of it.
v. 2 is a poetic reminder that God is the creator of everything.
The remainder of the psalm seems to be words of worship, perhaps a worship procession. The questions were probably spoken by the priest, and the answers given by the people.
"Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty,
The LORD mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O you gates!
Lift up, you everlasting doors!
And the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts,
He is the King of glory." vv. 8-10
I'm thankful that we still worship the same "King of glory, the LORD strong and mighty."
