Philippians 4:10-23; Psalm 89:1-8

Philippians 4:10-23

"For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." v. 13 This is one of those Christian "sound bites" that may often be taken out of context. In this case, Paul is talking about being satisfied with whatever the Lord provides. Paul had learned to be content whether he has almost nothing or whether he was abundantly supplied. He could do it through Christ who gave him strength. When we claim v. 13, we must remember that we can do the same; we can "do without" or we can remain faithful in times of plenty. In vv. 10-17 Paul is praising the Lord that the Philippian church had shared financial gifts with him when he was in need.

As Paul remembers their generosity, he tells them that at present he has all he needs, and he reminds them that God is pleased when we give sacrificially to the Lord's work. Then he gives them this wonderful promise: "And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus." v. 19 This promise is for us too, but we must remember that it doesn't come out of the blue. It is given to believers who trust God, who remain faithful, and who are generous with their time and money.

Paul closes this letter by sending greetings to God's people and with this prayer, "May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit."

Psalm 89:1-8
This is a psalm about David's reign as king of Israel, and it looks forward to Christ's reign for all eternity.

The psalmist first sings of God's unfailing love and faithfulness which will never end. It is as enduring as the heavens. This thought is surely worthy of our meditation every day. The psalmist praises God's great wonders and faithfulness. "For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord?...the highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne. O Lord God of Heaven's Armies! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O Lord? You are entirely faithful."

As we work our way through this psalm, we will be reminded of many of God's wonderful attributes, particularly His faithfulness. Meditating on these things will increase our faith.
