Hebrews 5:11-6:3
The author rebukes the Hebrews because they are not growing and maturing the way they should. He calls them spiritually dull, and he says they weren't listening. He says that they have been believers long enough that they should be mature enough to be teaching others. Instead, they still need instruction on the basics. They are like babies who still need milk and cannot yet eat solid food. (Heb. 5:11-14)
These are strong words and difficult to hear. No one likes to be called childish! But something is wrong when believers keep going over and over the basic teachings of Christ and do not grow and become mature in their understanding of the things of God. Heb. 6:1-3
Psalm 119:129-136
"The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand." v. 130 Yes, we are "simple," and how we need God's Word to guide us.
In recent days the internet and Facebook have been lit up with comments about politics and about violence in our country as well as in other places. All this is important (though much of it is sad), but do we spend as much time listening to God as we do to rants on Facebook? Let's try to remember, when we find ourselves troubled about current events, to look into God's Word for comfort and answers.
"Come and show me your mercy, as you do for all who love your name. Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil. Ransom me from the oppression of evil people; then I can obey your commandments. Look upon me with love; teach me your decrees. Rivers of tears gush from my eyes because people disobey your instructions." vv. 132-136
