James 1:22-25
The word of God gives us spiritual birth. v. 18
It is like a seed planted in our hearts that will produce good fruit. v. 21
It is like a mirror that shows us who we are and what we need to do. vv. 22-25
It's important to hear God's Word and really listen to it and absorb it, but it is even better to OBEY it. Our Bible study time is working if it changes our behavior and our attitudes. If we are obedient students of the Word, God promises to bless us for it. It's the perfect law that sets us free. v. 25 It shows us our sin so that we can seek God's forgiveness and change our ways. In this way we are free from sin's control and free to live the full life for which God created us.
Psalm 138:4-8
Even the kings of the earth can thank the Lord and sing His praises. This is a psalm written by King David, and perhaps he witnessed to other kings about the one true God. We should remember that Jesus died for the powerful and famous people (including presidential candidates!) as well as for every day folks like us. As these famous people come to our minds, we should remember to pray for their spiritual needs.
v 6 reminds us that, though the Lord is great, He cares for the humble, but he keeps his distance from the proud.
In times of trouble, which were many for David, he trusted God for His protection. "You reach out your hand, and the power of your right hand saves me." v. 7
David also trusted god to work out His will, and He will do the same for us. "The Lord will work out his plans for my life--for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever." v. 8 He is our creator, just as He was Davids. His power and perfection and faithful love are still available to us today! Praise the Lord!
