Matthew 7:15-23
Watch out for false prophets! The word "prophets" in this instance essentially means "teachers." These are false teachers that seem to teach or preach about God and the Bible. At first they may appear sincere, but they are not. We must examine what they teach and how they live in order to determine whether or not they are "wolves in sheep's clothing." Of first and foremost importance is that the teaching is consistent with the Bible. If the teacher uses very little scripture and does not make use of the context, this is a red flag. A false teacher will often make promises that cannot be backed up by scripture. He may tell you that if  you'll send money, he will pray for you, and God will heal you or meet your financial needs or something of that nature. A false teacher will usually promote himself and minimize Christ which is exactly the opposite of what a man of God should do. Another worrisome sign is an overly-emotional plea for money. Some TV evangelists live a lavish life-style while wheedling money out of vulnerable people, many of whom can ill afford it. A false teacher may live an immoral lifestyle. In today's internet world, it's not too hard to determine whether or not a well-known teacher practices what he preaches.

This is one reason that our primary spiritual nourishment should come from our local church, and our tithes and offerings should go there (or through there) too. We are a "family"--the local body of Christ. We see our leaders; we know them and their families; we can observe their lifestyle. And most importantly we can compare their teaching with the Word of God that we hold in our hands!

It's easy to "talk the talk," but the real test is whether or not we "walk the walk." vv. 21-23 warn us that not everyone who talks a religious talk is truly born again. Only those who believe the truth about Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross in our place--those who trust Him for their salvation will enter heaven.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."   John 3:16-18

Happy are we when we learn to praise God, to rejoice in Him, and to walk in the light of His presence. He is our glory and strength!

Here are a few hints to keep us on track with this praising and rejoicing. Don't neglect God's Word! Bring your troubles and worries to Him in prayer! Worship with sincere believers! Sing praises to the Lord--or perhaps listen to some music that honors God and lifts Him up!
