This is a psalm of praise for what God would do. God had made a covenant with David that his descendants would be kings forever. This promise actually looks forward to the reign of Jesus Himself who came through the line of David. And so we can rejoice along with Israel because Jesus is our Savior and King!
vv. 1-2 is a promise the psalmist is making to the Lord, and it's good advice for us too. "I will sing of the Lord's unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness. Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens.
God's love is unfailing! Just think of it. Really no human love is perfect because we are all...well, human! Because our experience with people reminds us of human failure, sometimes it's hard to realize that God's love is unfailing, and it will last forever. In fact, it's as enduring as the heavens.
In v. 3, the psalmist reminds God of His promise to David. This also is a good practice. Not that God needs a reminder, but we need to focus on God's promises. As we do, our knowledge of the Word will increase and our faith will grow.
Next we will look at the attributes of God listed in vv. 5-14.
- He performs great wonders so that all heaven and myriads of angels praise Him.
- Nothing and no one can compare with the Lord. Even the highest angelic powers stand in awe of Him.
- Angels praise Him for His faithfulness.
- He is entirely faithful.
- He rules the oceans.
- He is able to scatter His enemies.
- The heavens and earth are His. Everything in the world is His. He created it all!
- He created north and south.
- Powerful is His arm, and strong is His hand.
- Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
- He is a God of unfailing love and truth.
