Matthew 7:7-12
Remember we are still reading the Sermon on the Mount. We have seen many areas where the instructions seem all but impossible to keep; we've been told not to worry or judge. How do we do all this? Jesus puts it simply, "Ask, seek, and knock!" He tells us to come to Him and ask for His help and strength. Seek for His truth and His will in the Bible. Knock and He will be open to us. These three commands indicate that we are to be persistent in our prayer and study so that we will grow and gain wisdom. In this way, we will have a better idea of how to pray and what to ask for. We can then be confident that God will hear and answer our prayers. vv. 7-8

Then Jesus goes on to use the family as an illustration. This surely is not the first time the Christian life has been compared to the family. God is the Perfect Parent! If we being sinful humans know how to be generous with our children, how much MORE will the Perfect Parent be generous with us! vv. 9-11

This section ends with the so-called Golden Rule. "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." If we and others would just follow this one simple rule, I wonder how many of the world's problems would be solved? No one wants to be cheated, abused, taken advantage of, gossiped about, ignored, or mistreated in any way. Therefore, if we're following the Golden Rule, we won't be guilty of harming others! If others are following it, we have no need to fear or be suspicious of them!
