Psalm 110; Luke 22:39-53

Psalm 110
The Messiah, the Lord Jesus, would come as a man through the human descendants of David who is writing this Psalm. And so David is Jesus' earthly ancestor, but more importantly, Jesus is David's Lord. Jesus would come in the following roles--perfect and etermal:
1.  King  vv 1-3
2.  Priest v 4
3.  Judge v. 5

Luke 22:39-53
Remember that in this whole chapter, we are looking at how Satan worked during this part of Jesus' ministry. This is not to minimize that other points are there in the scripture as well. In these verses, we see that Satan was at work in the Mount of Olives during the night of the passover. Jesus went there to pray knowing what was coming. He warned the disciples to pray too so that they would not be overtaken by temptation. Jesus Himself prayed that if possible this horrible suffering would pass, but He was totally committed to doing the Father's will. The disciples did not heed his instructions to pray, but fell asleep. He again warned them to get up and pray so that they would not give in to temptation.

In the next scene Judas betrays Jesus. Jesus is ready for this, but the disciples are not. They try to physically fight for Him, but this is not a battle of flesh and blood but rather a spiritual battle. Jesus said in v. 53, "...But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns."

We know that Jesus' death on the cross was God's perfect and sovereign plan, but we also see that people were making terrible, evil choices--giving in to the temptations of Satan to bring it about.
