Psalm 119:33-40
These verses teach us that we should value the same things that are valued in the Word of God. We should have an eagerness for God's Word rather than a love for money! v. 36 The Psalmist asks God to turn his eyes from worthless things and to give him life through His word. v. 37 Spiritual riches are the most important as well as the most permanent of all! Any earthly wealth or material things or even our comforts can be gone in an instant. And so we must not make idols of them. We know all these things, and yet we are sometimes still tempted to put our priorities in the wrong places. And so it's good of God to remind us!
Acts 2:1-13
Pentecost was one of the annual Jewish celebrations. This was the first Pentecost after Jesus' crucifixion. On this particular day the Holy Spirit came "like the sound of a mighty rushing wind" because this was the day God had appointed to be the birthday of the New Testament church. Jesus had also promised that He would send "another Comforter," the Holy Spirit. The ministry of the Holy Spirit had been somewhat different in Old Testament times, but this begins a new era--that of the church when the Holy Spirit would come to live within all believers. He showed Himself on this special day in the form of the sound of wind and flames of fire appearing and resting on each of them. Though the Holy Spirit lives within each of us as believers today, He does not show Himself in such a dramatic way as He did on that Day of Pentecost. Another miracle that took place was the "speaking in other tongues." These were known languages understood by the listeners but not known to the speakers. Many from different backgrounds praised God and worshiped Him, but as always some ridiculed them saying they were drunk.
