Hebrews 1:1-4; Psalm 119:65-72

Introduction to Hebrews:
We don't know who wrote the book of Hebrews. It is written to Jewish Christians who were under pressure from the Jews as well as from the Romans. This book assures them and us that Christianity is true, and that Jesus Christ is indeed the promised Messiah. He is supreme, and He is sufficient for our salvation. The book encourages us to grow in faith and spiritual maturity.

Hebrews 1:1-4
God has spoken, and we hear His voice through His Word. It's so important for us to listen! Hebrews starts by remembering that in the Old Testament God spoke through the prophets, and now He has spoken through His Son. vv. 1-2  God has actually revealed Himself through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was the agent through which God created the universe. v. 2  As our creator, NOTHING in our lives is beyond His reach or out of His control. He knows all about us, and we can trust Him for our security and well-being. We should go to God first for advice, going to Him in prayer and listening to Him through His Word.

Not only does Jesus reveal God, He IS God! "The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command." v. 3 And so we see that Jesus is God, He shows us God's character, and He even sustains all creation. But not only that, this same power which shows us God's character and sustains creation, brought about our salvation when He cleansed us of our sins. No sinner is so lost that the power of God cannot save him! When Jesus finished this great work of salvation, He sat down at the right hand of God--the Majesty on high. His work of salvation was finished. He never has to die again for the sins of the world, and those of us who have received salvation do not need to be "saved" again. This relationship is final and eternal. The saving power of Jesus shows us that He is far greater than the angels, and the name "Son" is far above the names of any angels.

Psalm 119:65-72
God's Word educates us. No student of the Word is ignorant! It shows us God's love and goodness, and it teaches us good judgment and knowledge. vv. 65-66 It brings us back when we wander off. v. 67. Sometimes we have to go through the "school of suffering." When we do it's important to learn the lessons God wants to teach us. v. 71  God's instructions are priceless--more valuable than millions in gold and silver. v. 72
